Trümmelbach : un nouveau grand

Anchor test in Trümmelbach.

I took two very rusty anchors from Trümmelbach and replaced them with new, stainless steel one.
After that I took the two old anchors (plate + Maillon Rapide) to our Mammut laboratory for breaking strength testing.

They were still ok and had a breaking strength of 23kN.
After 10 years or more in the water the breaking strength is still ok despite they do not look very trustworthy.

If someone else has old anchors used in canyons and would like to know the breaking strength; Just send them to me:

C'est super tes mesures. Ca me rassure de mettre pendu dessus

Faut pas non plus avoir trop confiance. Je me rappelles des spits dans les étages en particuliers qui se cassaient en deux à la simple traction à la main (J'ai pas vérifier s'il y avait 2 alliages différents)

Interesting your anchor testing, it is a good idea to test the breaking strength of old equipment we find in the canyon.

It was a Ø10mm bolt not stainless? and what was the Maillon Rapide diameter?

Here some photos:

Anchor and Maillon was alloy steel and the plate was stainless steel.
The Anchor was M10 and the Maillon Ø8mm.

Jep you are absolutely right

But you know it is bad light in the Trümmelbach and they looked worse than they actually were.
It was still worth testing them $\:D/$ .

The weakest point was most probably rather the bond between the stone and the bolt, which is quite difficult to test on place

You should give those anchors to Fiumiccicoli. For him that would be luxury ones!!!!!! I guess he would use them as single anchors on top of a 150 meters high waterfall!!!

Yes most likely. As the anchors were also in alloy steel.
But I don't have the tools to test them on place.

The material mix alloy/stainless steel or alu/steel is not recommendet.

Oui, mais c'est sur la surface. Y a encore beaucoup de marge comparé aux maillons des Vosges du nord

I bet the breaking strength would be way lower! let's say ... 10kN?

Des cordes dans cet état on en trouve souvent en Suisse!! Il y en a une superbe dans Buuschebach, avec des herbes de dizaines de centimètres qui ont poussés dessus!!

Le photo n'est pas fait en Suisse.
Effectivement c'est en France, la Reunion, Dudu

Mais il'ya aussi des viex cordes en Tessin. Froda, Lodrino, Pontirone.....mais pas facile de trouve.

"Gros débit" I would say
quite dangerous in that period owing to erratic snow melt.
But possible, still...
one or two weeks ago would have been better ?

J’ai lu ca à midi, il a du atterrir en amont de la partie canyon.
Ca doit être frustant quand on apercoit l'hélicoptaire une 15aine de fois!!
