Trümmelbach IV "The Connection"

Finally the very famous Trümmelbach is now opened on it's full length!

History:
Trümmelbach V
In 2000 Andreas Brunner descended the Trümmelbach the first time by using his famous natural anchor and rope sling technique. In total he drilled only two bolts by hand for the whole canyon! What an effort..... =D>
8 years later Caracal made this canyon famous by publishing it on Descent-Canyon and in his canyon topo-book "Le Tour de L'Europe en Canyon"
For several years this canyon was and still is one of the top winter-canyons in Europe until the owner of the tourist-part called the police in 2015 and a court case started, which will hopefully end with a good result for us canyoneer in 2017 [-o< .

Trümmelbach III
In 2012 Emmanuel Belut discovered the Trümmelbach III section. In late summer 2012 we could open the canyon in two days (first day by finding and equipping the exit, second day doing the canyon).
Since then it got many repeats and it counts to the top canyons in this region.

Trümmelbach I & II
One month after the opening of Trümmelbach III we found two other sections of the Trümmelbach high up, starting close to the Eigerglacier.
Trümmelbach I is of medium interest, but offers some nice sections. Trümmelbach II is partially very nice, but short.

Trümmelbach IV
Since the opening of Trümmelbach I - III it was very obvious, that there must be a nice connection from Trümmelbach III to Trümmelbach V.
It took us 4 years to take the decision for a try. After a carefully check from the side we decided this week to enter at the exit ropes of Trümmelbach III to enter in the last, undiscovered slot of the whole Trümmelbach.
Here a nice description about the Trümmelbach IV by Pascal van Duin:http://pascalvanduin.blogspot.ch/2016/1 ... ction.html

With a total length of 6.4km and a height difference of 1855Hm the integral canyon is now one of the longest and also one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe.
Unfortunately all five sections are almost impossible to combine as the ideal time in the year for the several sections is not the same.
A good and challenging combination could now be: Trümmelbach I - III or Trümmelbach III-V (as soon as Trümmelbach V is open again) 8)

Here the full map with all the Trümmelbach sections:

I cannot say more than "thank you" for opening this section. We repeated Trümmel IV today and it is really an incredible canyon by itself! Some very narrow parts. Some huge gorges that feels like being in a "great canyon" and some nice tobogan / jumping sections at the end.... :D

I did not expect such a fast repeat....but I'm glad you did it and that you liked it =D>
Hopefully we can do next year the Trümmelbach III-V together.... 8)

Here some photos of the exploration:

The end of the first section, on the left you see some remains of the glacier ice-fall. At the section below exists a higher rock-fall risk.
Image

Just a bit further down is the remain of the "big" ice field. Compared to map.geo.admin.ch the ice-field is less then half of the size, so the satelite photos are quite old. Further is also visible, that there was for quite a long time no big ice-fall in this section.
Also the other two ice-fields visible on map.geo.admin.ch further down the canyon are not more there anymore.

A great thanks for this final oppening in Trummelbach ! I'm looking forward for the end of the court case, to go back in this unique canyon and discovering all it can offer. Just for the sake of precision: the landlord did not call the police, but called directly someone in the Court of Thun (or Bern, I can't remember). This person from the court contacted the policeman, asking him to come and give us a fine directly. The cop did not try to explain what was illegal in doing this canyon, he recognized he did not know, but he said he only did what he was expected to do by the court. Now I'm still waiting for either an explanation or an apologize, more than one year later. Unlucky they are, I'm a very hard headed person who knows his rights. In order to be the canyon it deserves to be, trummelbach has to get its final part oppened again to everyone. Lets hope it will make a good precendent for swiss law. Trummelbach's story is to be continued, thanks to those who carry on...

Letter of intent dated October 2017 between Kaspar von Almen AG and the Swiss Mountain Guides Association SBV.
The most important points:
Canyoning is only permitted outside the opening and operating hours of the von Almen AG facility!
The operation of von Almen AG is usually closed from 15 November to 15 December and 10 January and 15 March. Canyoning is permitted during these periods by appointment.
Visits only by appointment! Phone no. 0041 33 855 32 32

This number provides information about the specific opening hours and work on the ravines.
The paths, bridges and tunnels of von Almen AG must not be used. Emergency situations are reserved.
The exit from the canyon in the valley floor is exclusively on the left side of the stream (direction of flow) after the last waterfall.
Abseiling hooks may be replaced if in old/bad conditions. New installations may only be installed with the consent of von Almen AG.
The gorge is rated v5a5V and therefore reserved for very experienced canyoning enthusiasts with adequate equipment!
Von Almen AG accepts no liability whatsoever for accidents in connection with canyoning.
We ask all canyonists to stick to the above-mentioned points! In the event of non-observance by individual persons, von Almen AG reserves the right to cancel the declaration of intent and prohibit the canyon for canyoning.

Thanks Holzi for all your efforts. Unfortunnatly I won't be enthousiatic and applaud this result as a victory or even a good news. It is indeed a sad news, which confirms the corruption of swiss policy around private property in general and here about private property of lands in particular. It is a fact : a landlord can own a whole mountain and river, contrary to the letter of swiss civil law, by some kind of juristic magic trick. As a result, if one wants to humbly visit those natural beauty, one has to ask for the permission of the allmighty landlord, who keeps to his personnal discretion the power at any time, if unhappy, to forbid the access again. We're warned, so please all bend your knees... It is sad indeed. I can only wish it wont always be like this, and that the power of money will be defeated in some futur and submited to more important value, like the common possession of territories to the population. What was recently something we could hope would come n some relativly near futur is vanishing away as another crazy uthopia for dreamers.
And personnally, I can only encourage anyone who will dare to oppose to this disgusting power, by any non violent mean, legal or illegal... In the mean time, one of the best canyon of the world is now completely accessible, thanks to My Lord Von Allmen, but moreso thanks to the discoverers. Von Allmen familly will pass, Trummelbach will stay.

We did Trummelbach IV the 3rd of November. Anchors ok. The big snowfield has completely melted, changing forever this section of the Canyon. The danger of serac collapsing is always present and cannot be avoided.
