helo,
realy cool forum you've got here!
sorry about my language:), my father speaks fluent french but i was never wise to use that and learn from him .
i'm a 32 canyoneer from israel. got some experience in canyoning in israel, jordan, sinai(egypt) and australia.
i know how to rappel and prepare natural anchors but i'm always happy to learn more from new people.
i dont have enough experience with alpine canyoning involving cold or fast flowing canyons.
i heard a lot of good thing about canyons in europe and about sierra de la guarra.
and i'm planning on coming to spain between 22.9 to 2.10 for some canyoning and via ferrata.
first,
can you give an advice about where to go in spain (or gurra) for canyoning?
second, ill be realy happy to join people and do some canyoning together. its' always better to go with experienced locals
btw, if you ever come to israel or jordan i'll be happy to take offer maps, info and maybe even go together to see the amazing canyons there.
thanks
itay.

Hi Itay,
Welcome here
The Sierra de Guara is actually a wonderful place for canyoneering. It's the spot where this activity became a new sport in the eighties.
You can go around Huesca to discover Guara and the Mont Perdu canyons.
At this period some beautiful canyons like Mascun, Gorgas Negras or Balces will have a lack of water, but you'll have many others choices.
Of course, the levels of water depends of the weather....
To practice in Europe, you'll need some wetsuits, waterbags, and helmets (the water temperature never exceed 15° at this period).
If it's your first experience with this stuff, there's a lot of professionals guides that you cab go with.
If you don't know this site, you can't make your own idea visiting the canyon database here (for Spain/Aragon/Huesca) :
http://www.barranquismo.org/foros/index ... pic=3322.0
The canyon's are rated with users appreciation's (4/4 the best, 0/4 the worst).
Don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Welcome on board ! Very nice canyon trips that you did !
As Antilolo said, you'll need some equipments to practice inthere, for confort but also for security reasons.
Around Huesca,in Sierra de Guara, we stay usualy in Rodellar, Bierge or Alquezar.
See you
Psiko.

hey,(bonjour)
thank you very much for your reply, Antilolo and Psiko, (and, i'm sorry i can't communicate yet in franch, i'm going to this trip with a french friend, maybe i'll learn a little)
i've already checked a little of the site ( good info and great photos!)
i'll be happy to ask you some questions:
1. what type of a neoprene wetsuit do you use? (is it 5mm or 3mm? do you use a hood? neoprene socks? )
i'll ne landing in barcelona and i'm wondering where can i buy it.
2. where can i find information if a canyon has natural anchors or bolts for abseiling? (internet site, book, etc. )
including info about how many abseils and so on.
3. i guess, you are right, guara canyons wont have a lot of water in spetember.
forgive my ignorant question - but if water level drops and the stream is weaker - dosnt the canyon become more easy to pass?
for example, why is georgas negras difficult or not recommended?
hope i'm not nagging, just curious:)
merci
itay

5mm is good, theres two types : one or two pieces (pants+jacket). The wetsuits you'll find in europe almost always have a hood. But we use it only in very cold canyons. Socks of 3mm or 5mm are also welcome, if you don't want to have frozen toes.
In Barcelona, you can find wetsuits in stores like decathlon. If yiou don't, there's some stores in Guara (Alquezar, Rodellar) or near (Ainsa, Huesca).
Maybe you can rent one there.

The canyon you targeted are well none for years and many peoples goes there. 99% of the time, you'll find bolts, or rope around a tree, with a link for abseil.
In the wetsuit store, ask for a book. You'll find information for access, and canyon profiles.
This one is the "bible" of Guara (in spanish):

Of course it will be easier, but some of them will loose most of there interest with less water. No more jumps, or slides...
And sometimes you'll find stagant water
But canyon's like Gorgas Negras and Peonera are "main rivers", you'll find a little bit of water insinde.

nice pics, it's an good idea for winter travel for us.
for find partners, you post on this topic when you comes. maybe french canyoners are interresed. it's possible to find on
http://www.barranquismo.net for spanich canyoners.
it's possible to add your canyon on topo base in this website?

thanks.
this wadi is one of ~20-40 canyons and tributaries which falls to the dead sea from the west (israel side, east is jordan)
the season for these wadis is october-may, and almost none of them flows
they all have seasonal pools.
among those ~7 are permited for abseil, 10-15 are not and 10-20 more do not require abseils (but are beautiful to hike nonetheless).
the ones who are permitted got bolts.
how do i add the canyon to the map/ site?

Thanks for the pics !
If you don't understand French, it will be a little bit difficult to add this canyons to the database. So you can paste your informations into a new topic (in the section "Autres régions du monde") and I (or we !) will translate them.
Thanks !

for add a canyon in base, you follow this instructions
http://www.descente-canyon.com/canyonin ... formulaire but maybe the base is closed
Maybe other french canyoners translate your descriptions for add. but not me, I don't speak english very well
