Hello canyonists
There is a new regulation for canyoning in the canton Bern.
Below is a deepl translation of the document created and released by the swiss canyoning club bachab.ch:
Regulation for canyoning
Bernese Oberland as of 1.1.2020
It is thanks to the immense commitment of the Swiss Mountain Guides Association and the Bernese Mountain Guides Association - in particular Franz Baumgartner - that the new Fisheries Ordinance of the Canton of Berne prohibited water sports activities in only five gorges throughout the year as of 1 January 2020.
Matthias Holzinger, on behalf of the bachab canyoning association, supported and supplemented the multi-page statement with detailed concerns and demands to the relevant government council, which was finally submitted by the working group on 12 April 2019. Of the 25 river sections originally proposed for closure by the Office for Agriculture and Nature, fortunately only nine - or five - are left. Gorges - affected!
The following canyons or canyon sections are prohibited from 1.1.2020:
1 Gältebach - all sections (Lauenen)
2 Gore Virat (Corcelles)
3 Hünibach Choleres Gorge (Thun)
4 Latrejebach - upper and lower section (Aeschi near Spiez)
5 Talbach Falls (Lauterbrunnen)
The arbitrary and partly not comprehensible demands on the part of the hunting inspectorate could, thanks to objective reasons, all be eliminated! The nature conservation organisations Pro Natura and WWF do not meet the concerns of the canyoning scene at all. An expert opinion by the Swiss Ornithological Institute in connection with 13 stream sections resulted in the following eleven stream sections already 14 days earlier to the inspection than first intended! Nevertheless, certain brooks may only be released from a certain
time can be committed. The following examples show that this can make sense for nature conservation reasons: Out of consideration for the breeding occurrence of the dippers, the Swiss Ornithological Institute recommends waiting until 1 July for eleven sections of the watercourse to open (e.g. Buuschebach and Eistlenbach). In the case of the Heitibach and Wyssbach streams, the specialist organisation does not recommend opening the track until 15 July. This is due to possible golden eagle breeds and various late breeding rock-dwelling bird species. The report by the Swiss Amphibians and Reptiles Coordination Office had a negative impact on canyoning: In future, two stream sections will be completely closed due to fire salamander populations. In particular, these are Gore Virat and Hünibach Cholereschlucht. The complete list with the possibilities of walking can be found here:

In the name of bachab we ask all our members to abide by the ordinance and the walking restrictions! It can be assumed that other cantons will also make adjustments. Therefore, it is important for our sport that we stand in a good light and are perceived as a nature and environmentally friendly community in order to have a say and influence in the future. Thank you!
Thanks again to the fighters on the front line who have put this feat of strength into practice: Franz Baumgartner, Fred Wirth, Albrecht Wandfluh, Ueli Frutiger, Manuel Gilgien, Martin Maurer and Matthias Holzinger.
